Known Crewmember Launches at Boston Logan

October 25, 2011 - Airline pilots flying through Boston Logan International Airport on Tuesday, October 25, had the opportunity to go to work using the newest Known Crewmember program test site. At 4:00 a.m. Eastern Time, the Air Line Pilots Association Int’l (ALPA), and the Air Transport Association (ATA) began operating five Known Crewmember access points at Boston Logan, one each in Terminals A, C, and E, and north and south checkpoints in Terminal B. Several hundred pilots were processed at these access points on the first day of operation.

This enhanced security-screening program for airline flight crew members reflects a threat-based approach to aviation security, makes air transportation more secure, and shortens screening lines for airline passengers.

The Known Crewmember program enables Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers to verify a pilot’s identity and employment status. Through the program, airline pilots who fly for 28 participating airlines are currently able to undergo security-screening at dedicated Known Crewmember access points at Boston Logan International and six other U.S. airports. ALPA’s goal is to make the program available to all U.S. airline pilots and at airports throughout the country.

Boston Logan is the seventh and final trial site for the Known Crewmember program, with the other trial access points located at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Miami International Airport, Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, and Washington Dulles International Airport.

With the Boston Logan International Airport test site now operational, the Known Crewmember Program begins a 90-day evaluation period at the seven selected airports. At the end of the 90 days, the TSA, working with the ATA and ALPA, will evaluate the results and consider a potential next stage of the program.
