ALPA to CAPA Summit: Pilots are Ultimate Investors in Building Strong and Competitive Airlines
Capt. Moak First Labor CEO to Participate in Summit Program

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Capt. Lee Moak, president of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), underscored today in panel remarks before the Centre for Aviation—CAPA 2014 World Aviation Summit that airline pilots have a role as the ultimate investors in their companies and that they share a common commitment with management to building economically strong and competitive airlines.

“Pilots have a vested interest in making certain our companies are bold competitors on the world economic stage,” said ALPA’s president. Highlighting the positive results of collaboration between the union and individual airline managements, Capt. Moak underscored successful efforts to work together through bankruptcy, mergers, and international joint ventures to forge economically sound companies that are competitive on the global economic stage.

On the broader industry level, ALPA’s president also cited the union’s joint efforts with both individual airline managements and airline industry trade groups to address the economic threats posed by current U.S. government policies, including the operation of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection preclearance facility at Abu Dhabi International Airport, an airport to which no U.S. airline flies.

ALPA’s long-held position is that the United States government must stand up for U.S. airlines and their workers and help to level the playing field in the international marketplace, including changing the tax scheme, reducing unnecessary non safety regulations, ending U.S. taxpayer subsidies to foreign carriers, and ensuring Open Skies are actually promoting fair skies for U.S. airlines.

Founded in 1931, ALPA is the world’s largest pilot union, representing more than 51,000 pilots at 30 airlines in the United States and Canada. Visit the ALPA website at www.alpa.org or follow us on Twitter @WeAreALPA.
