DAL Pilots Donate $15,000 to Cincinnati Charity

From left, F/O Houseman, F/O Bren Fries, F/O Chuck Albers, Capt. Kingsley Roberts, DAL MEC chairman Capt. Tim O’Malley, Philip and Jeanne Bell (ICYO founders), and youth from ICYO.

On August 15, prior to the Cincinnati Reds home game against the New York Mets at the Great American Ball Park, the Delta Pilots’ Charitable Fund (DPCF) presented a donation of $15,000 to Cincinnati’s Inner City Youth Opportunities.

DPCF chairman, Delta F/O Joe Houseman, stated “It is our privilege to support ICYO’s valuable mission with funds raised entirely through the generosity of the Delta pilots,” as represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l. Houseman was joined by DPCF board members F/O Bren Fries, F/O Chuck Albers, Capt. Kingsley Roberts, and Delta MEC chairman Capt. Tim O’Malley to present the check to ICYO founders Philip and Jeanne Bell.

The mission of Inner City Youth Opportunities is to teach practical life skills to develop responsible, educated and caring youth. Inner City Youth Opportunities provides a safe and structured environment for inner-city children (grades K-6) of low-income families after school and during the summer.

The Delta Pilots Charitable Fund is managed and funded entirely by Delta pilots. The DPCF has donated over $1 million to a variety of charities that help America’s most valuable resource—our children. The fund was formed in 1999 as a philanthropic, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) fund, which supports charitable activities and leaves a permanent legacy for future generations in communities where Delta pilots live and work.

Bankruptcy Judge Weighs In on APA Pilot Contract
Today’s headlines reported that in the 1113 hearing between American Airlines and the Allied Pilots Association, Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane turned down the company’s request to reject the pilot contract.

While the court’s decision is appreciated, it’s clear from even a quick reading that the decision supports the company request and puts only a speed bump in management’s path to obtain court-ordered concessions.

More specifically, the judge’s 106-page decision finds that American met all the requirements of Section 1113 in relation to its motion to reject the APA collective bargaining agreement (CBA) except in relation to the necessity of two proposed changes: the expansion of American’s ability to furlough pilots and to use code-sharing to expand American’s network. The court concluded that American established that significant changes are necessary to the CBA, and the judge rejected virtually all of the union’s other arguments that the concessions are too deep and that the company must first pursue a merger with US Airways.

His denial of the motion was without prejudice to remedying the two defects identified in this Opinion and submitting a new application under Section 1113 by American. It’s expected that management will do that quickly.

TSA MEC Elects New Leadership
The Trans State MEC met this week to elect new leaders who will assume office September 7. Capt. Cliff Simmons was elected MEC chairman, F/O Jeff Martin was elected MEC vice chairman, and Capt. Will Cheeseman was re-elected to serve as MEC secretary-treasurer.

Simmons most recently served as TSA vice chairman since April 2012 and was the Negotiating Committee chairman during the contract negotiations that concluded with a collective bargaining agreement in 2011. “I’m honored and privileged to be elected by my peers to serve as their chairman during the next term. I plan to work closely with Jeff and Will to continue to build on the improved labor relations we have enjoyed during the last two years, while properly administering and enforcing contract compliance.”

“Cliff had a front-row seat to the crafting of the language in our current contract,” said outgoing MEC chairman Capt. Jason Ruszin, “so I’m confident he will do a stellar job defending the gains made during those contentious negotiations.”

Martin previously served as LEC 39 first officer representative and is acting as Grievance Committee chairman. Cheeseman retained his role and will continue to oversee many of the day-to-day MEC administration and budget items.
