Potential Perfect Storm Threatens East Coast, AERF Available |
|
|
Weather forecasters say Hurricane Sandy has the potential to be a super storm for much of the U.S. East Coast. Some storm models have the Category 2 hurricane merging with a strong cold front and strengthening into a weather system of epic proportions. As the mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions brace for the worst, the ALPA Emergency Relief Fund stands ready to offer assistance.
AERF provides for the immediate needs of ALPA pilots and their families who fall victim to widespread disasters. AERF is funded from contributions by ALPA members and staff, and is one of the many benefits of belonging to the Association.
To learn why AERF is
so important, watch this

Canada Board Urges Parliament to Oppose C-377 |
|
|
The first session of the 41st Parliament resumed on September 17, and one of the bills at the top of ALPA’s pilot partisan agenda (Bill C-377—An Act to Amend the Income Tax Act [Requirements for Labour Organizations]) is now before the Finance Committee. Since it was first introduced, the Association has actively worked to defeat this bill, which would place unwarranted, onerous monetary reporting requirements on labour organizations such as ALPA.
“This bill will not only impose increased financial obligations on all
labour organizations, but will also impose onerous financial obligations on Canadian taxpayers,” said Capt. Dan Adamus, ALPA’s Canada Board president, in letters sent on behalf of ALPA’s 2,800 Canadian members to members of Parliament urging them to oppose C-377.
The bill, which is supported by members of Parliament from the Conservative Party, seeks to amend the Income Tax Act to require labour organizations to make very detailed annual financial filings covering salaries, revenues, assets, loans, and disbursements, among others.

CIRP Conducts Training Session |
|
|
ALPA’s Critical Incident Response Program (CIRP) conducted training October 23-25. Twenty-six pilots from 14 airlines participated in the class, which was held at the Association’s Herndon, Va., office.
“It’s imperative that we have pilots trained and ready to respond,” said F/O Louise Cullinan, ALPA CIRP chair, who presented the training and facilitated discussions. “A stressful and potentially debilitating event can occur at any time and we need CIRP representatives available at each of our member airlines to offer their support.”
The purpose of CIRP is to mitigate the psychological impact of incidents and accidents, and aid in the normal recovery from these events before harmful stress reactions can affect job performance, careers, families, and health.
CIRP is a division of ALPA Pilot Assistance. Log onto the members-only portion of the ALPA website and visit the
CIRP page for more information.

Action Coming Soon on EU ETS |
|
|
When Congress returns for its lame-duck session after the elections, we are working to ensure a quick House vote on S. 1956—The European Union Emissions Trading Scheme Prohibition Act, which provides the U.S. Department of Transportation with the authority to protect aircraft operators and their employees from the market-distorting effects of the EU ETS. We urge ALPA members to pay close attention to
this blog, the
ALPA website, and your e-mail for the opportunity to take action on this important issue.
ALPA worked with air carriers, general aviation, and aviation manufacturing industries to promote S. 1956, which represents a compromise that includes input from stalwart supporters of environmental protection like Senators Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), John Kerry (D-Mass.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), and Ben Cardin (D-Md.). The bipartisan sponsors of S. 1956, Senators John Thune (R-S.D.) and Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) worked tirelessly to negotiate a meaningful compromise which ultimately passed the Senate by voice vote.
