CHICAGO – Leaders of the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA) unit at United Airlines, the United Airlines Master Executive Council (UAL-MEC), have elected new officers to serve two-year terms beginning January 1, 2002. Captain Paul R. Whiteford was elected chairman of the UAL-MEC and pilot member of the UAL Corporation board of directors; Captain Steve K. Hanel was elected vice chairman; and Captain Jeffrey Barath was re-elected secretary/treasurer. All three of the newly elected officers ran unopposed.

For the last two years, Miami-based Captain Paul Whiteford, a 23-year veteran of United who currently flies the Boeing 767, served as vice chairman of the UAL-MEC. He previously served as a representative of the United pilots’ base in Miami. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama and was a 20-year veteran of the United States Air Force. Captain Whiteford, 51, lives with his wife, Marsha, and stepson, Christian, in Hobe Sound, Florida.

Seattle based Captain Steve Hanel, 52, has been a pilot with United for 21 years. He is currently a Boeing 737 captain who has served for more than five years as a representative of the United pilots’ base in Seattle. He is a graduate of St. John’s University, Collegeville, Minnesota and lives in Kirkland, Washington.

A United pilot since 1991, Captain Jeffrey Barath currently flies the Boeing 727. For the past two years Barath served as secretary/treasurer of the UAL-MEC; prior to that he was the vice chairman for the local United ALPA council in New York. He had also served in a variety of other elected and volunteer positions for the union. A graduate of Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Barath also served in the United States Air Force. He resides in Bronxville, New York and is based in New York.

Upon being elected MEC Chairman this afternoon, Captain Whiteford stated, "I look forward to serving my fellow United pilots during these very critical times in the airline industry. I believe that the ALPA experience I’ve gained over the years will enable me to lead the United pilots as we work through the difficult times ahead. I also look forward to a stronger, more positive relationship with all employees at United -- the AFA, IAM and non-contract personnel. I’m confident that together we can make United Airlines a success to regain its rightful place as the number one airline in the world."
