America West Pilots to Conduct Informational Picketing in Phoenix

PHOENIX — Uniformed pilots of America West Airlines will conduct informational picketing and leafleting Sept. 3 at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport to demand their management seriously address the key issues in their ongoing negotiations for a new contract.

Pilots will be outside level 2 at the southeast and northwest ends of Terminal 4 from 8:30 to 10 a.m., at which time there will be an additional contingent of pilots providing informational leaflets to passengers inside the terminal near the concourse A and B security checkpoints.

"On a day that is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of workers across the nation, we want to once again remind management that America West would not be what it is today were it not for the investments and sacrifices made by its employees," said Captain Roger Cox, chairman of the America West ALPA unit.

America West pilots have been negotiating with management since February 2000 and have not yet begun discussing key economic issues including pay and retirement. Negotiations are currently being conducted under the direction of a federal mediator.

"With a new chief executive, now is the perfect opportunity for America West management to show their commitment to this airline and its employees by negotiating a fair agreement with our pilots," Cox said.

Celebrating its 70th anniversary, ALPA is the world’s oldest and largest pilots union, representing 66,000 members at 47 airlines in the United States and Canada. Visit the ALPA Web site at http://cf.alpa.org.
