ALPA Elects Canada Board Members
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – The Air Line Pilots Association, International, today announced that Captain Kent Hardisty, an Air Canada Jazz pilot, has been reelected to serve a second two-year term as the Association’s Canada Board president. Rounding out the three-member Board are the newly elected vice-chairman, Captain Dan Adamus, also an Air Canada Jazz pilot, and the secretary/treasurer, Captain Dean Newhouse, a Kelowna Flightcraft pilot.
The elections were part of ALPA’s 39th regular biennial Board of Directors meeting, during which all of the union’s representatives meet to deliberate on Association matters and set the course for its future. Captain Duane E. Woerth, ALPA’s president, who was reelected to a second four-year term, rallied the union’s entire elected leadership to confront, as one unified force, the challenges facing the aviation industry in the United States and Canada.
Woerth said, "Even though dark clouds threaten commercial aviation and the piloting profession, I am energized, rather than discouraged. In adversity we are required to gather up our strength and unity; adversity is why we will stay together. I am honored to serve airline pilots and recommit to working for them and their families, confident that together we will accomplish great things," he said.
The Canada Board gives the more than 2,000 ALPA pilots who fly for Canadian carriers their own identity in the prestigious International Federation of Air Line Pilots Associations (IFALPA). It also advocates issues specific to pilot interests in Canada through liaison with the Canadian government, aviation-oriented agencies and the aviation community.
In addition to his reelection as ALPA Canada Board president, Capt. Hardisty also was reelected as an ALPA executive vice president and member of the Association’s Executive Council, the governing body that oversees fiscal and budgetary matters for the union. Capt. Hardisty has worked on behalf of his fellow pilots since 1987, when he began volunteering for various committees of the Canadian Air Line Pilots Association before it merged with ALPA in 1997. Capt. Hardisty held the positions of Master Executive Council chairman for the AirBC pilot group and vice-president of the Canada Board and a director of IFALPA prior to serving his first term as Canada Board president. Capt. Hardisty, a native of Victoria, and his wife, Kerri May, live with their son, Grant, in Kelowna.
As vice-chairman of the Canada Board, Capt. Dan Adamus also has the distinction of representing Canadian ALPA pilots at IFALPA. A DHC-8 pilot, Adamus has worked on various union committees through the years including jumpseat, communications and strike preparations. Since 1996, he has been serving as Government Affairs Committee chairman. A native of Toronto, Capt. Adams resides in Ottawa with his wife, Francine, and two children, Kurtis, 4, and Dana, 3.
The Canada Board secretary/treasurer, Capt. Dean Newhouse, a B-727 pilot, brings a wealth of pilot advocacy experience to the Canada Board leadership team, having just concluded a term as its vice-president. In addition to serving as IFALPA Canada director, Capt. Newhouse participated on the IFALPA ATS committee. He also served as Master Executive Council chairman for the Kelowna Flightcraft pilot group for six years and is their Negotiating Committee chairman. A native of Edmonton, Capt. Newhouse resides in Calgary with his wife, Deanna, and their daughter Dakota, 14.
