Northwest Pilots Ratify One-Year Contract Extension

Northwest Airlines pilots as represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA) voted today to ratify an agreement for a one-year extension of their current contract tied to pay raises.

The agreement, which passed by a 86.8 percent to 13.2 percent margin, provides for a one-year extension of their current contract, from Sept. 13, 2002 to Sept. 13, 2003, a 4.5 percent pay increase on Sept. 13, 2002 and a 5.5 percent increase on Sept. 12, 2003. Additionally, airline management and the pilots union agreed to begin "focused" negotiations in January 2003, with a mutual goal of achieving a new contract by Sept. 13, 2003.

ALPA Master Executive Council Chairman, Captain Mark McClain said, "This agreement provides our pilots with near-term pay increases while we prepare for focused negotiations beginning in January 2003. It will allow NWA management to focus on steering our company through this difficult period and provides us with a bridge to what we hope will be a more stable negotiating environment. We remain committed to the goal of achieving a new contract that equals or exceeds those of our peers by the amendable date of Sept. 13, 2003."

The NWA unit of ALPA represents over 6,000 NWA pilots. Founded in 1931, ALPA is the world’s oldest and largest pilot union representing more than 62,000 pilots at 42 airlines in the United States and Canada. Visit the ALPA Web site at http://www.alpa.org.
