Statement of the ALPA TWA Master Executive Council on the Acquisition of TWA by American Airlines, February 1, 2001

April 2014 - ALPA’s president, Capt. Lee Moak, testified before the U.S. House Aviation Subcommittee at a hearing titled “Air Service to Small and Rural Communities.” Capt. Moak underscored the serious economic threat to U.S. airlines posed by state-supported foreign airlines and foreign airlines’ business plans that conflict with U.S. policy.

June 2012 - Capt. Sean Cassidy, first vice-president of ALPA, testified at a Senate hearing on the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme, which he described as an “ill-advised, legally questionable job killer for U.S. airline industry employees.”

June 2010 - Capt. Jay Pierce (Continental) and Capt. Wendy Morse (United) addressed the House Subcommittee on Aviation, Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure regarding the proposed United-Continental merger.

May 2010 - ALPA was back on Capitol Hill May 25, responding to a congressional invitation to weigh in on bankruptcy reform. During the last decade, airline managements—facing tough economic times—routinely resorted to the U.S. Bankruptcy Code to sidestep labor contract obligations and place an inordinate share of the financial burden on employees.

June 2009 - On June 11, Capt. John Prater, ALPA’s president, testified before the House Aviation Subcommittee, and on June 17 he testified before the Senate Aviation Subcommittee. In his oral testimony, Prater commended each committee for holding the hearing to look more closely at several critical issues affecting airline pilots.

February 2009 - Capt. John Prater, far left, told congressional lawmakers that new FAA reauthorization legislation is needed now and must address a number of critical safety and policy concerns.

May 2008 - In testimony before the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s Aviation Subcommittee, Capt. Mary Ann Schaffer (United), chair of ALPA’s Task Force on Aviation Sustainability and the Environment, described the airline industry’s major progress to date in improving its effect on the environment.

February 2008 - Capt. John Prater asked members of Congress in mid-February to reduce the frequency and risk of runway incursions and deal with other airport safety issues facing the U.S. airline industry by increasing funding for the National Airspace System (NAS) modernization effort.

June 2007 - ALPA’s president, Capt. John Prater, testifies before the U.S. Congress on June 6 on flight-time duty-time limits and rest requirements, the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP), and the current state of pilot hiring and training.

May 2007 - Capt. Terry McVenes (US Airways), far left, ALPA’s Executive Air Safety Chairman, took the ALPA perspective on aviation safety and security priorities to Capitol Hill on March 22. (AFA President Patricia Friend, center, and IAM General Vice-President Robert Roach, Jr., right)

February 2006 - ALPA’s president, Capt. Duane Woerth, testifies on Capitol Hill on February 8 against the DOT’s effort to permit expansion of foreign control of U.S. airlines.

Sept 2005 - ALPA’s president, Capt. Duane Woerth, appeared before Congress in July to testify in support of the FAA rule that restricts pilots from flying FAR Part 121 as captains or first officers after they reach their 60th birthday.

June 7 and June 22, 2005 - ALPA’s president, Capt. Duane Woerth, testifies in support of airline pension reform before the Senate Committee on Finance.

March 2005 - Capt. Terry McVenes (US Airways), right, ALPA’s Executive Air Safety Chairman, testified on Capitol Hill in March about flight crews’ and passengers’ increasing vulnerability to laser exposure.

October 2004 - ALPA’s president, Capt. Duane Woerth, right, testifies before the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure’s Subcommittee on Aviation. Joining him are American Association of Airport Executives President Charles Barclay, left, and Air Transport Association Vice-President and COO John Meehan.

March 2003 - ALPA’s president, Capt. Duane Woerth, right, testifies before the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure’s Aviation Subcommittee, on March 12. Also testifying were Deborah C. McElroy, president of the Regional Airline Association, center, and James C. May, president and CEO of the Air Transport Association.

January 2003 - ALPA’s president, Capt. Duane Woerth, left, tells the Senate Commerce Committee that proposals to revise the Railway Labor Act with mandatory arbitration “are a solution in search of a problem.”
